Tax and Other News
Another busy and successful tax season has passed! April 18th marked the end of the 2016 tax season.
Now is a good time to designate a special folder, drawer, and/or computer file to collect your tax related documents for filing next year's tax return.
Some 2015 Forms are Still Arriving:
The IRS extended the deadline to as late as June 30, 2016 for the 2015 Forms 1095-B and 1095-C to be issued. These forms are used to report health insurance that was provided to you by an employer or other third party.
At this time you should have received your Form 1095-A, which reports your health insurance premiums and premium tax credits from health insurance you purchased from the marketplace.
You may still receive your Form 5498, which reports your 2015 contributions to your IRA accounts. Compare the amounts reported on these forms to the amounts that you reported on your 2015 tax return.
When you get your late arriving 1095-B or 1095-C, be sure to compare the months of reported health insurance coverage on the forms to the coverage you reported on your tax return.
You should be fine if your filed your tax return on a timely basis without the 1095-B or 1095-C under these circumstances:
1) You paid for your own private health insurance all 12 months of the year and did not use the marketplace nor any government agency to obtain it.
2) You had employer-provided health insurance for all 12 months of the year and you are confident that it met the minimum requirements for coverage.
3) You didn't have health insurance at all for the entire year and you did not apply for any certification from the marketplace that exempted you from required coverage.
4) You had employer provided health insurance although not for the entire 12 months AND you are very confident that you have accurate information regarding the specific months of coverage and that it met minimum requirements AND you have the specific information that is required to accurately report the circumstances of other months that you did not have coverage.
Note that regardless of when you file your tax return, the 1095 forms will be compared to your tax return and it is expected that taxpayers will receive IRS notices if their tax return does not agree with the 1095 forms. The statute of limitations for the IRS notices is as long as three years after the filing date of your return.
Please call our office now for an appointment for an office meeting or phone conference meeting, or to arrange for drop-off, mail-in, or secure file upload of your tax return data.
We'd like to help you make sure you don't overpay your taxes. Invest your tax savings for a better future for you and your family.

Indiana Business News:
The US Department of Commerce released data on Real Personal Income for 2008-2012:
In the report, Indiana's Regional Price Parity, or in general the cost of general living items, is 8.9% below the US Average. Michigan is 5.6% below. Illinois is slightly above the average, or .6% above.
According to a survey by thumbtack.com*, the state of Indiana ranks #14 in the country for overall small business friendliness. Indiana is #3 in the nation for ranking of friendliness of employment, labor, and hiring regulations. This is good news for both business owners and employees!
As far as Indiana's tax system, the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council ranks Indiana #19 of the 50 states for best tax systems for entrepreneurship and small businesses. Prepare to watch this rise, though, because recent legislature has eliminated the inheritance taxes and will be reducing the corporate tax rates.
Michigan, by comparison, is ranked #11 of the 50 states in the same study of best business tax systems for entrepreneurship and small businesses.

PIN Numbers and Identity Theft
Choose your PIN number carefully. If you choose a number that is easily guessed, you could be asking for trouble. My latest article How to Select a PIN includes advice from the experts.
Indiana is experiencing a rapid rise in the number of identity theft cases on Indiana tax returns. In the 2013 tax season, Indiana reported approximately 1,500 cases of identity theft on tax returns. In the 2014 tax season, this number has risen to as many as 39,000 cases of identity theft!
What is identity theft on a tax return? It is where someone uses your name and social security number to file a fradulent tax return. This might be done to steal your tax refund or it might be done to create a totallly false tax return.
